Cathodic Protection On A1 Allerdene Bridge Refurbishment

Nufins were instrumental in the refurbishment of Allerdene Bridge on the A1 Gateshead Western Bypass near the Angel of the North. The bridge carries traffic over the East Coast Main Line and is a main artery route through the North East of England.

Nufins were awarded the contract by A-One+, the managing agent for Area 14 to supply 10m³ of Nugrout Hi-Spec Repair Concrete to the project.

Scope of works

Specialist bridge refurbishment contractor USL BridgeCare broke out failed areas of the concrete bridge deck using industrial planers and ride-on scarifiers. Any corroded reinforcement was replaced and sacrificial anodes tied to the rebar prior to pouring of Nugrout Hi-Spec Repair Concrete.

Nugrout Hi-Spec Repair Concrete was specified by the client because of its compatibility with cathodic protection and its low water-cement ratio, giving the concrete a moisture content of less than 6% after 24 hours as required for the contract. Concrete was then allowed to cure to achieve a 50 N/mm² compressive strength prior to the installation of Britdex MDP waterproofing.
